Botswana Rural area coverage solution

Botswana – Rural area coverage solution

RNS

Sufficient coverage in rural areas always poses challenges for network operators. The question is how one gets coverage to outlying areas in a sustainable and cost effective manner. Traditional site build with microwave connectivity is expensive and power thirsty, especially in areas that are off the power grid. For various remote areas of Botswana, RNS designed and deployed solar powered sites using four channel frequency translating repeaters, which allowed for coverage expansion into remote villages without the need for expensive power connection and transmission links.

The Axell Wireless four channel repeaters with their 1800 links allowed for target sites as far as 45 km from the closest cell site to be linked back to the network giving reliable communications and data connectivity to the villages. Each site has a built in battery back-up system designed to give 24 hour operation for up to five days to safeguard against inclement weather.
